Zada RIP

In Memory of.... "Zada" A tribute to a special dog.

The gorgeous hound who started all this.... the 'lucky one' - saved 7 years

ago from the pound, Zada was the inspiration for Friends of the Hound.

It was this sweet, loving dog that encouraged us to devote our time,

energy and effort to rescuing and rehoming Greyhounds. She is the

reason that so many other lovely Greyhounds have had the chance to live.

Zada passed away suddenly on 14/12/2009, causing much shock &

sadness - she was 8 years old. We will miss our gorgeous girl - but her

legacy will continue - with many more adorable dogs, like her, getting the

chance to live their lives as much-adored pets & companions.

Gold Coast Show Success

Hi Hound-loving friends,

Our Friends of the Hound promotional stand at the Gold Coast Show last weekend was a great success. Loads of people visited our stand over the 3 days, & were quite taken with the dogs - who all did an amazing job of promoting Greyhounds as pets. Our new 'Rescue Donations' coats that the dogs wore were immensely successful (thanks again Kay, & well done Merlin, Sammy, Gypsy, Rocket, Emmy, Wally, Coco, Zada, Molly, Mel & of course, our 2 little ring-ins - Phoebe & Jasper, who were amazing drawcards for their big doggy-friends' cause. I think Jasper - who unexpectedly was in his element, & strutted his small stuff superbly, probably earnt at least $500 or more in donations on his own!)

Huge thanks to Kayleigh & Jon for a marvellous job in organising & setting up our stand & manning it over the 3 days & many thanks to those who also volunteered their time to help out.... Babette, Susan, Kay & Peter. Well done!

Short Grey 2K USA interview on DailyGrommet

http://au.video.yahoo.com/watch/4175564/11238601

"Only 10 states left that have tracks now because the industry is declining..."

The US is different slightly to Aus in that dogs mainly live at kennels at the racetracks themselves. So closing down a track will leave up to 1000 dogs homeless if not managed properly.

Grey 2K's recent win for closing the Massachusetts track is progressive in that it is going to be closed over a timeline, so appropriate accommodation/etc for the dogs is organised, and workers have a chance to find other jobs without being "laid off instantly".

Do you think Australia will ever be without Greyhound Racing?

Greyhound Gathering 09

A Letter from Lisa...

Dear Hound-Lovers,

Just wanted to say 'Thank You' for coming along to our New Year Greyhound Gathering on Saturday. It was great to see you, and so nice to have so many people and Greyhounds get together. We had 33 hounds there which was fantastic - & I'm sure they all enjoyed spending time with so many other Greyhounds. All were incredibly well-behaved, as usual.

Friends of the Hound appreciate your support and it was terrific to have an inspiring and fun get-together with our members, adoptees, foster carers and friends. We are fortunate to have the support of Tony and Anne at Camp Tailwaggers who allow us the free use of their wonderful property and facilities for these occasions. Babette and Morgan were able to get some good footage and it was uplifting to see so many happy hounds. We hope to be able to organise a huge Greyhound picnic in the future with even more dogs and people present. I didn't get around to chat to everyone unfortunately, although I was hoarse by the end of the evening so must have managed to speak to most of you - and those that I didn't, I hope to catch up with next time!

Again many thanks.

Greyhounds make great pets!

Regards,

Lisa

p.s. anyone who took photos on the day can please email any good ones through - please resize them to under 200mb first (as silly me didn't end up getting my camera out of it's bag!

New Blog for Updates....

This blog format has been created to keep website viewers abreast of changes made to the website, upcoming news/events etc.

Please feel free to comment after any entry, we appreciate any feedback!

Great news!

Friends of the Hound won the "Biggest Heart" Award of the Paws & Claws Awards for Charity on Saturday 16th August, 2008. A truly wonderful result showcasing the dedication and efforts of the group, and the support and empathy being generated for Greyhounds and their plight.

It was a surprising and prestigous result considering the calibre of the other nominees for this category.

A big THANK YOU to all those that voted for us.

We appreciate your acknowledgement and support.

The Friends of the Hound Greyhound Adoption Group, through a grant made possible by Voiceless, the fund for animals, has produced glossy A3 posters to promote awareness of Greyhounds and their suitability as pets. It is aimed at raising the profile of Greyhounds by creating a positive image and providing some simple facts for the public to ponder.

Each year in Australia thousands of Greyhounds are destroyed for no other reason than they become surplus to racing industry requirements. For Greyhounds it is...

the quick, or the dead.

Through our Greyhound awareness campaign and ongoing rescue and rehoming efforts we hope to reduce the number of beautiful, healthy Greyhounds being killed each year.

We ask that you support this campaign and contact us if you are able to assist with the distribution of these posters for display in vet clinics, animal shelters, pet shops, produce stores and any other participating outlet providing the exposure needed.

Thanks to those who have already offered their help.
